‘雪道を登る / Climbing up the snowy road’

Tsukuda collected leftover fabrics (especially the local textile, Kameda-jima,) that had been used for sewing clothes at UTOPIA, a garment factory in Niigata city, and layered them all together. The way the fabric layered only on the edges reminded her of a sidewalk after a snowfall, where the snow melts with the movement of people and cars, leaving the snow only on the sides of the path.
The installation presents the streets in the wavy landscape of the Niigata city built on layers and layers of sand dunes.

新潟市内の洋服店にて使われている土地の織物である亀田縞を中心に、新潟市にて収集した素材を使用して作ったタペストリー的作品。
人の衣服の形を抜き取った後の布は、同じ向きに並べ重ねていくと、何枚重ねても中心は空き、周辺部にのみ布が重なる。
その様子を見て、新潟市の市街地にて、大雪のあとの歩道が、人の歩みや車のタイヤ、店ごとの雪かきやマンホールの熱などでまばらに溶け、徐々に道の脇にのみ雪が残っていく様子と重なった。
また、新潟市の海沿いには何層も連なる砂丘があり、佃の滞在した施設もその砂丘の上に建っていた。日々坂道を上り降りしながら、波打つ街の景観を意識していたことが、展示空間の作り方につながっている。

Filmed when Ufitia, an artist in residence from New Zealand, was finishing her first stay in the snowy land, Niigata. This work captures her way of walking on the snowy road including the experience of her stay in Niigata.
After snow piles up on the road, the snow keeps melting, piling up again, freezing, and changing the appearance with human activities and sunlight.

ニュージーランドからのレジデンスアーティストであるウフィティアが、初めて雪国での滞在を終える頃に撮影。大雪のあと、人の活動や日差しと共に溶けてはまた積もり、凍り、変化し続ける雪道を、彼女の滞在の経験と合わせて歩くパフォーマンスを撮影した映像作品。

Filming/Editing/Voice: Nanao Tsukuda Hiyori-yama, a small mountain located in Niigata City, used to be a local landmark with an observatory providing a good view of the harbor and the town. However, as the dunes grew, the view of the sea and port disappeared, and the observatory and shrine were burned down in a large fire during the Meiji period (1868-1912), and Hiyori-yama was rebuilt in its present form (only Sumiyoshi Shrine was rebuilt). Through the whistling fence, we can assume that Hiyori-yama today is still surrounded by strong winds and still has its view of the people in the town, same as the past days.

新潟市内にある日和山は、かつては港や街を見渡せる展望台を備えた地域の名所として機能していたが、砂丘の増大等によって海や港が見えなくなり、また明治時代の大火により展望台と神社の焼失するなどを経て、現在の形（住吉神社のみ再建）へと作り直された。
かつての日和山も今の日和山も、街の人の様子が見えることや、風が多く吹くことはおそらく変わりはないということを、風に鳴る柵を通して確認する。
