Tsukuda’s work uses the celebration of birthdays in Australia as vehicle to discuss culture, migration and change.
During Tsukuda’s artistic exchange in Sydney, she observed one family singing happy birthday in English but having a conversation in a different language. This experience sparked her research into the traditions and cultural backgrounds associated with birthdays in Australia and how these differ depending on the age group or community celebrating.
It also made her reflect on the way birthdays are celebrated in Japan and how this has changed over time and with influences from western culture.
Her work can be seen as a performative interaction with bought and found objects.
It incorporates ‘staples’ of typically white Australian children’s birthday celebrations – fairy bread and the Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Cookbook as well as white ceramic plates, colourful plastic plates and red and white sand.
In the context of the work these objects make us think about how white Australian birthday culture influences those who were already here, those who visit or those migrate to Australia. It also allows us to reflect upon the resilience of cultural traditions, especially birthday traditions in migrant communities and first nations communities.

シドニー西部の住宅地を歩いていた際に、ある家から漏れ聞こえてきた英語のHappy Birthdayを歌う声は、歌い終わると、佃にはわからない別の言語での家族の会話へと移り変わり消えていった。
シドニーには多様な民族文化を背景とするコミュニティが多数存在し、その中には誕生日を祝わない文化圏の親たちも、ろうそくを吹き消さない文化圏の親たちもいるが、子どもが他の子どもを呼んでパーティーをしたいと言えば、西洋的なスタイルでの誕生日パーティーをしないわけにはいかない。もちろん、その文化を受け入れることに疑問のない人々もたくさんいる。
作家自身はHappy Birthday To Youを英語（カタカナ語）でしか歌わずに育ってきたこと、日本語での翻訳の歌い方（歌詞）がわからない、ほとんどの日本人が知らないということに疑問を覚え、この映像を制作した。
自身にとって慣れているカタカナでのハッピーバースデーソングを歌い、その後、オーストラリアに住む英語以外の言語の移民の人数や分布を調べ、多かった上位の言語のバースデーソングの翻訳を歌う。それらすべては最後には英語のHappy Birthday To Youに取り込まれていく。
バースデーケーキとなるのは、オーストラリアの誕生日パーティーの定番のお菓子であるfairy bread（食パンにバターを塗りカラフルな砂糖をまぶしたもの）。そしてその土台の皿には砂漠の砂を用い、歴史的に繰り返し外部から人の訪れがあり、多様な人々の暮らすオーストラリアの砂漠の砂が、様々なカラフルな断片にその形を変えられながらも時を重ねるというイメージを込め、ループする映像を制作した。

Visited the Spellbound Storytime in Auburn
Spellbound Storytime is one of the hub of ACE’s Multicultural Women’s Hub that is run by Yamane Fayed. Tsukuda visited this program and joined the storytelling practice and held a small workshop together with the members of the Spellbound Storytime. Yamane says that the idea of this program is to train multilingual storytellers, and the aim is to skill up the women with multicultural backgrounds to support them to create their own creative enterprise.
Tsukuda could talk with women from several cultural backgrounds about how they deal with happy birthdays, and the experience made her to work on the video work, ‘To Happy Birthday To You‘.
シドニー郊外の街オーバーンにて、Spellbound Storytimeという女性たちの会に参加した。
このプログラムでは、移住等で別の言語や文化背景を持つ女性たちが、様々なストーリーテリング共に学んだり実践したりしていく。英語の勉強であり、子どもたちに自身の背景の文化を途絶えさせずに伝えるための語りの工夫を生み出す場でもある。文化によっては、女性が自ら家を出て活動すること自体が難しい場合もあるため、女性たちが気軽に前向きに集まれる場を作ろうとしているとプロジェクトを始動したYamane Fayedは話す。このプログラムにて、小さなワークショップも共に行い、参加している多様な文化背景を持つ女性たちに、各家での誕生日の過ごし方などのインタビューを行い、上記の映像作品の制作へとつなげた。
